Choosing Wood for Your Project preview

Hi there,

Choose your material around the project, the finish and the tools you have.

Keep these points in mind

  • Pine: inspect boards for knots, straightness and surface damage before choosing your pieces.
  • Poplar: compare appearance and the intended finish before choosing boards for visible surfaces.
  • Oak: plan cuts and joinery around the grain and the dimensions your project needs.
  • Maple: test your machining and finishing approach on an offcut first.
  • Plywood: compare the grade, actual thickness and edge treatment with the plan requirements.
  • Whatever you choose, let the material acclimate and allow for wood movement in the design.
