Your first-project checklist
Your next build starts with a clear plan.
Before you buy lumber, make four quick checks. Choose a project that fits your tools, your space and the way you want to use it.

A better start
Four checks before the first cut.
Can you follow the build?
Read the instructions from start to finish. Look for dimensions, a parts list and a clear assembly order before choosing your project.
Can you make the required cuts?
Match the cuts, joints and holes to the tools you own and know how to use. Include clamps and measuring tools in your check.
Will it fit where you need it?
Check the finished size, your assembly space and the route out of the workshop. Measure doorways as well as the final location.
Can you source the right stock?
Compare the plan’s lumber sizes, hardware and finish with what is available locally. Price the complete list before buying.

What a useful plan should show
Look beyond the finished photo.
- How the individual pieces fit together
- Dimensions you can check before cutting
- Tools, materials and hardware to prepare
- An assembly sequence you understand
A good-looking project is the starting point. The drawings and instructions help you decide whether it belongs on your workbench.
